Improv Restart!

Tonight I had, what I can only call, a renewal of faith. As I have said before, I have been in a rut for the last few months with my improv learning and confidence. I was in a bad place and taking all the wrong lessons to heart.

Tonight though. Tonight I got a jumpstart! Ash had a friend in town who teaches workshops in improv and runs a theater out of Austin. She had him come over to her house and teach one for a group of us. At the beginning I was feeling like I really didn't want to do it, as I was hungry and tired from having just gotten off work and sitting in traffic for an hour. All that changed once we started though.

We did a few warm up games to start and moved into two person scenes, to three and four and finally into a montage game at the end. The thing that he kept emphasizing was keeping and honoring what was happening in the beginning of a scene. That if you kept the basic idea alive it didn't matter where the scene went as long as you had that base line to tap in on. That really resonated with me. That and tap outs, which have always alluded me, they came clear tonight. Really what it came down to was listening and trusting my impulse to add to a scene. It felt brilliant. I can't wait for our L3 class to start next week.

I remembered tonight why I fell in love with improv. It's that feeling of complete satisfaction, like great sex. Amazing!
